One last day of a Tahoe vacation, I picked the morning’s agenda, a quick ascent of Cave Rock, on western shore Nevada side. It was another smoky day at the lake when Amber and I started off before 8AM, trying to catch the sunrise. It’s about a half mile from the trailhead to the top of the rock, and even on this weekday morning, we were not alone. I’m pretty sure there was a woman flying a drone to film herself doing yoga poses, or something ridiculous like that. I couldn’t quite tell. Didn’t want to know, really. The company wasn’t wholly unwelcome, though. Some nice people took our picture for us! The view from the rock was astounding, even with the smoke, especially the vertigo inducing vantage of the highway directly below. On the way back, I found a disturbing message in the woods. then we spent the rest of the last day of our vacation at Amber’s favorite place, Sand Harbor, where we enjoyed the beach and also did some kayaking.

ON PEAK NAMES
The original Washoe name of Cave Rock is De’ek wadapush or Standing Grey Rock
